Here we have a Type 99 Arisaka built by Kokura Arsenal, marked as a Series 20, featuring a 26" barrel and a turn-down "Sniper Bolt", chambered in 7.7x58mm Arisaka. With no import mark found. The blemish on the top of the receiver is due to the required defacement of the chrysanthemum ("mum") on all surrendered Japanese rifles. The "mum", a chrysanthemum symbol, represented the Imperial Japanese Army's ownership and signified the Emperor’s authority. As part of the surrender process, these markings were typically scratched, ground off, or struck through.
In 1942, the "Short Rifle" Type 99 Variant with a 26" barrel was introduced, becoming the basis for the Type 99 Sniper Rifle. Officially introduced in June 1942, the Type 99 Sniper Rifle was intended to replace the Type 97 Sniper Rifle, but production never met wartime demand. Of the 800-850 sniper rifles built by Kokura, this particular rifle was not one of them.
This item was not a factory-designated sniper rifle, as it lacks the correct receiver markings on top and does not have a modified stock for a scope mount. As the war progressed, the Type 99 became known for "last-ditch" production methods, with parts being mixed and matched. This rifle likely acquired its sniper bolt through an arsenal repair.
